Salt
In the dirt, there's a gun. Its mouth points toward a plate. What's on the plate? Why, it's salt!
In olden days, salt was so valuable it was used as money. So imagine the gun buried in the dirt, its mouth vigilantly guarding the plate of salt.

When you see the salt, you think to yourself, "She owes (しお) me big time, so I'm going to go ahead and snatch her salt!" Who is she, you ask? She's the lady who owns the salt. And the gun in the dirt, of course.
