To Be Late
intransitive verb, ichidan verb
If something or someone is slow, and they "do slow" they are going to be late.
おくれる
What is slow and probably going to be late all the time? A big oak (おく). Oaks have trouble moving, and are slow, and therefore are always late, too.
もし飛行機が遅れたら、補償金のようなものは支払われたりするんでしょうか。
If the flight is delayed, can I get some kind of compensation?
